RESUMO

Nonlinear electron trapping physics governs the onset and saturation of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in laser beams with many speckles. Hot electrons from intense speckles, produced during SRS daughter electron-plasma-wave bowing and filamentation, seed and enhance the growth of SRS in neighboring speckles by reducing Landau damping. Trapping-induced nonlinearity and speckle interaction through transport of hot electrons and back- and sidescattered SRS waves enable the system of speckles to self-organize and exhibit coherent, sub-ps SRS bursts with more than 100% instantaneous reflectivity, consistent with a SRS transverse coherence width much larger than a speckle width.

RESUMO

A short pulse (few picoseconds) laser probe provides high temporal resolution measurements to elucidate details of fast dynamic phenomena not observable with typical longer laser pulse probes and gated diagnostics. Such a short pulse laser probe (SPLP) has been used to measure filamentation of a random phase plate (RPP) smoothed laser beam in a gas-jet plasma. The plasma index of refraction due to driven density and temperature fluctuations by the RPP beam perturbs the phase front of a SPLP propagating at a 90 degree angle with respect to the RPP interaction beam. The density and temperature fluctuations are quasistatic on the time scale of the SPLP (approximately 2 ps). The transmitted near-field intensity distribution from the SPLP provides a measure of the phase front perturbation. At low plasma densities, the transmitted intensity pattern is asymmetric with striations across the entire probe beam in the direction of the RPP smoothed beam. As the plasma density increases, the striations break up into smaller sizes along the direction of the RPP beam propagation. The breakup of the intensity pattern is consistent with self-focusing of the RPP smoothed interaction beam. Simulations of the experiment using the wave propagation code, PF3D, are in qualitative agreement demonstrating that the asymmetric striations can be attributed to the RPP driven density fluctuations. Quantification of the beam breakup measured by the transmitted SPLP could lead to a new method for measuring self-focusing of lasers in underdense plasmas.

RESUMO

In this study, we examined the effects of local climate aridity on the richness and composition of the thelastomatoid (Nematoda: Oxyurida) guild parasitizing the Australian giant burrowing cockroach, Macropanesthia rhinoceros (Blattodea: Geoscapheinae). In total, 9 thelastomatoid species parasitized this cockroach in north-eastern Australia (Queensland). Local observed richness ranged from 3 species (in Cooktown, Magnetic Island, Maiden Springs and Whitsunday Island) to 7 species (in Rochford Scrub). The lowest richness occurred in both relatively wet and dry climates, and the highest richness was in moderate climates. Three species, Cordonicola gibsoni, Leidynemella fusiformis and Travassosinema jaidenae, were found at all 13 collection sites. One species, Geoscaphenema megaovum, was found exclusively in dry to moderate climates. The remaining species, Blattophila sphaerolaima, Coronostoma australiae, Desmicola ornata, Hammerschmidtiella hochi and Jaidenema rhinoceratum, were found in moderate climates only. We hypothesize that the egg is the stage in the thelastomatoid life-cycle most vulnerable to the effects of adverse climate and that the geographical distribution for each species is, in part, bound by environments that are too dry, resulting in egg desiccation, and by environments that are too wet, resulting in decreased oxygen uptake across the egg-shell and in osmotic lysing.

RESUMO

We report 21 thelastomatoid species parasitizing 31 described and 5 undescribed geoscapheine and panesthiine cockroaches, representing all but 1 of the known species of these subfamilies in Australia. The nematodes have 3 distinct patterns of host distribution: dominant, moderate and rare. The 4 dominant species, Cordonicola gibsoni, Leidynemella fusiformis, Travassosinema jaidenae and Aoruroides queenslandensis, are highly prevalent, found in nearly all host species examined, and broadly distributed. The 8 moderate species have lower prevalences but are still widely distributed. Many of these species are more common in one host subfamily than the other. The remaining 9 rare species have highly restricted host and geographical distributions. Six of the 21 species are exclusive to geoscapheines, 5 to panesthiines and 10 are shared. These patterns suggest that most of the reported thelastomatoid species are generalists rather than specialists, that host-specificity within this group is low and that co-evolutionary speciation has had little, if any, impact on structuring the thelastomatoid fauna of Australian burrowing cockroaches. In a broader context, this study provides the first comprehensive examination of the role of coevolutionary speciation and host specificity in regulating the distribution of pinworms in arthropods.

RESUMO

Stimulated Raman (SRS) and Brillouin scattering (SBS) are examined in the kinetic regime using particle-in-cell simulations. Wave front bowing of electron-plasma waves (ion-acoustic waves) from trapped particle nonlinear frequency shift is observed in the SRS (SBS) regime for the first time. Self-focusing from trapped particle modulational instability (TPMI) is shown to occur in 2D and 3D SRS simulations. The key physics of SRS saturation is identified as a combination of wave front bowing, TPMI, and self-focusing: Bowing marks the beginning of SRS saturation and self-focusing terminates SRS. Ion-acoustic wave bowing also contributes to SBS saturation. Velocity diffusion by transverse modes and rapid loss of hot electrons in regions of small transverse extent formed from self-focusing dissipate wave energy and increase Landau damping, despite trapping that reduces Landau damping initially.

RESUMO

A molecular approach was used to genetically characterize 5 species (Aoruroides queenslandensis, Blattophila sphaerolaima, Cordonicola gibsoni, Desmicola ornata and Leidynemella fusiformis) belonging to the superfamily Thelastomatoidea (Nematoda: Oxyurida), a group of pinworms that parasitizes terrestrial arthropods. The D3 domain of the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA (LSU) was sequenced for individual specimens, and the analysis of the sequence data allowed the genetic relationships of the 5 species to be studied. The sequence variation in the D3 domain within individual species (0-1.8%) was significantly less than the differences among species (4.3-12.4%). Phylogenetic analyses, using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and neighbour-joining, tree-building methods, established relationships among the 5 species of Thelastomatoidea and Oxyuris equi (a species of the order Oxyurida). The molecular approach employed provides the prospect for developing DNA tools for the specific identification of the Thelastomatoidea, irrespective of developmental stage and sex, as a basis for systematic, ecological and/or population genetic investigations of members within this superfamily.

RESUMO

Thomson scattering is used to measure Langmuir waves (LW) driven by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a diffraction limited laser focal spot. For SRS at wave numbers klambda(D) less similar 0.29, where k is the LW number and lambda(D) is the Debye length, multiple waves are detected and are attributed to the Langmuir decay instability (LDI) driven by the primary LW. At klambda(D) greater similar 0.29, a single wave, frequency-broadened spectrum is observed. The transition from the fluid to the kinetic regime is qualitatively consistent with particle-in-cell simulations and crossing of the LDI amplitude threshold above that for LW self-focusing.

RESUMO

Concentrations of 10 organochlorine pesticides and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were determined in the territorial damselfish Parma microlepis at three urban locations and three reference locations centred on the Sydney region. Dieldrin, HCB and DDE were the most frequently detected organochlorines, occurring in 70-100% of samples collected. Alpha and gamma chlordane were also reasonably common and occurred in more than 30% of the samples. Each organochlorine compound investigated had a distinct spatial pattern of distribution. Related chemicals such as alpha and gamma chlordane, and DDT, DDE and DDD tended to have similar patterns of distribution. There were clear differences in patterns of distribution in organochlorines between urban and reference locations shown using non-parametric multivariate techniques. Relative variability of samples from urban locations was higher than at reference locations in 1993, but there was no consistent pattern of differences in the dispersions of samples among urban and reference locations in 1994. Age and condition indices (K) showed no association with total concentrations of organochlorine residues in fish. Significant, but weak associations were found between organochlorine residues and size, gonad somatic and liver somatic indices.

RESUMO

A diffraction-limited laser interacts with a plasma whose conditions are uniform on the scale of the focused laser spot. Two distinct, narrow waves are observed in the backscattered spectrum with phase velocities of v(phi)/v(e) = 1.4+/-0.08 and 4.2+/-0.1, where v(e) is the electron thermal speed. The high-velocity wave is ordinary stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from a Langmuir wave. The low-velocity wave corresponds to stimulated scattering from an electron-acoustic wave (SEAS), and implies strong electron trapping. Previous SRS data from low-density plasmas are reinterpreted in terms of SEAS.

RESUMO

The cuticular hydrocarbons of a widespread species of soil-burrowing cockroach, Macropanesthia rhinoceros, have been sampled from most of its known geographical locations. Analysis of extracts from individual insects has enabled a study of differences within a population as well as among geographical locations. In the case of M. rhinoceros, except for newly hatched first-instar nymphs, variations in hydrocarbon composition among individuals of different cohorts of M. rhinoceros, based on age and sex, are no greater than those among individuals of a single cohort. Geographical populations of this species are variable in hydrocarbon composition unless they occur within a few kilometres of each other. A few populations showed very different hydrocarbon patterns but, in the absence of any correlating biological differences, it is uncertain whether this signifies the presence of otherwise unrecognizable sibling species or just extreme examples of the geographical variation characteristic of this group of insects.

RESUMO

Microsomes from male rats treated with picloram (100 mg/kg/day) for 7 days showed a 48% decrease in 16 alpha-hydroxylase activity when incubated with (4-14C) androstenedione. These data are consistent with the assertion that picloram decreases the titer of hepatic male specific cytochrome P-450h. Several lines of evidence suggested that picloram is an inducer of hepatic cytochrome P-450 in male rats. First, SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed an intensified hepatic microsomal polypeptide (MW 54,000) following picloram pretreatment. This polypeptide co-migrated with protein bands which were correspondingly intensified after pretreatment with known inducers of cytochrome P-450d (3-methylcholanthrene and isosafrole). Second, no increase in the binding of metyrapone to picloram treated microsomes was noted compared with controls, suggesting no increase in phenobarbital-inducible forms of cytochrome P-450. Third, hepatic microsomes from picloram treated rats activated 2-amino-3-methylimidazo [4,5-f] quinoline (a cytochrome P-450d mediated catalysis) causing a 5-fold increase in the number of induced Salmonella typhimurium TA98 revertant colonies formed compared with control microsomes. Fourth, the binding of n-octylamine to hepatic microsomes from picloram-treated rats showed, like microsomes from 3-methylcholanthrene-treated rats, an increase in the proportion of high-spin cytochrome P-450 present. Cytochrome P-450d is known to be a high spin haemoprotein.

RESUMO

1. The effect of picloram on model xenobiotic substrate biotransformation in vivo was studied in female and male rat liver. 2. Treatment with picloram had little effect on epoxide hydratase and glutathione S-transferase activity, but caused a dose-dependent increase in ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity and a concomitant decrease in aldrin epoxidase activity in male rats. 3. Treatment of male rats with equivalent doses of 2-acetylaminofluorene, 2-amino-anthracene and picloram induced ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity to the same degree. 4. Treatment of female rats with picloram resulted in dose-dependent increases in ethoxyresorufin and ethoxycoumarin-O-deethylation without decreasing aldrin epoxidase activity. 5. Picloram binds to liver microsomal preparations from rats pretreated with phenobarbitone and/or 3-methylcholanthrene, giving a type I spectrum. 6. The results indicate that picloram is a 3-methylcholanthrene-type inducer, and the implications are discussed.

RESUMO

The effect of exposure to malathion on several parameters of hepatic xenobiotic biotransformation was studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Groups of rats dosed i.p. daily for 1 or 2 weeks with 40 or 200 mg/kg malathion showed an increase in epoxide hydrolase activity (1 week, 200 mg/kg) and glutathione S-transferase activity (1 week, 200 mg/kg; 2 weeks 40 and 200 mg/kg). Aldrin epoxidation was decreased after 1 week of exposure to 200 mg/kg and by both dosage regimens after 2 weeks. After 9 weeks exposure to 40 mg/kg malathion administered i.p. 3 times per week, however, no changes in hepatic xenobiotic biotransformation were noted. The results demonstrate that only continuous exposure to high doses of malathion results in an induction of epoxide hydrolase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Inductive effects on hepatic cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase activity were not observed irrespective of whether exposure was short- or medium-term.

RESUMO

Aldrin epoxidase and cytochrome P-450 levels were determined in sawfly larvae,Pergagrapta polita Leach. Of the tissues examined the anterior portion of the midgut had the highest levels of aldrin epoxidase activity and cytochrome P-450 content, 3.56 nmol dieldrin produced/min/mg protein and 1.28 nmol/mg protein, respectively. No significant differences in aldrin epoxidase activities were observed between groups of larvae representing the last three larval instars and between larvae feeding on two eucalypt species.

RESUMO

One hundred eight knees of 93 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and persistent synovitis of the knee were treated with an intraarticular injection of 270 mCi of dysprosium 165 bound to ferric hydroxide macroaggregate. Leakage of radioactivity from the injected joint was minimal. Mean leakage to the venous blood 3 hours after injection was 0.11% of the injected dose; this corresponds to a mean whole body dose of 0.2 rads. Mean leakage to the liver 24 hours after injection was 0.64% of the injected dose; this corresponds to a mean liver dose of 3.2 rads. In 7 additional patients examined, there was negligible or near negligible activity found in the draining inguinal lymph nodes. One-year followup was possible for 74 knees (63 patients). Sixty-one percent of the knees had good results, 23% had fair results, and 16% had poor results. There was a direct correlation between the radiographic stage and response to treatment. In knees with stage I radiographic changes, 72% showed good results; 93% showed improvement. In knees with stage II changes, 59% showed good results; 81% showed improvement. These preliminary results indicate that dysprosium 165-ferric hydroxide macroaggregate is an effective agent for radiation synovectomy. The low leakage rates observed offer a definite advantage over agents previously used.

RESUMO

Total condylar knee arthroplasty was performed on 64 knees with fixed valgus or valgus/flexion deformities. The technique for release of tight lateral and posterior structures is important to balance the ligament. Clinical results were rated good and excellent in 95% of the knees. Four patients with excessive flexion deformities required 6 weeks of cast bracing in the immediate postoperative period for instabilities caused by an imbalance in the spacing in flexion and extension. In no joint in the entire series did stability deteriorate with time. There were no patellar complications or nerve palsies noted. Radiographic evaluation revealed well-fixed components in 92% of the arthroplasties. None has required revision for mechanical loosening to date. With proper technique the total condylar prosthesis can be employed in knees with valgus or valgus/flexion deformities to give predictably good results. The total condylar III prosthesis may be required in severe combined deformities for added stability.

RESUMO

We have studied 241 total condylar knee arthroplasties with replacement of the articular surface of the patella in 206 patients. The average age was 65 years. The technique of replacement of the patellofemoral joint emphasises realignment of the quadriceps mechanism, minimal excision of the patella to preserve subchondral bone, preservation of soft tissue attachments including the infrapatellar fat pad, and closure of the quadriceps without tension. The results of replacement have been good to excellent in 95 per cent of patients followed for two years or more. There were no subluxations, dislocations or fractures. Loosening was noted in one case associated with anterior knee pain. Discomfort was also noted with eccentric placement of the prosthesis where bone was left uncovered. We consider that routine replacement of the patello-femoral joint is advisable with total condylar knee arthroplasty.

RESUMO

Twenty-three postoperative peroneal-nerve palsies in twenty-two patients were documented in the records of 2626 consecutive knee arthroplasties that were performed at The Hospital for Special Surgery from 1974 through 1980. This is an incidence of 0.87 per cent. The preoperative knee deformities included fourteen flexion contractures, eleven valgus deformities, and five biplane deformities. In five patients a peroneal palsy developed despite a peroneal-nerve release at the time of arthroplasty. Only two patients, who initially had only a motor loss, had a complete clinical recovery. Follow-up ranged from six months to seven years (average 3.1 years). Sensory deficits, initially noted in eighteen patients, had not fully resolved in any patient at the time of writing. Although motor deficits were initially noted in all patients, only 28.6 per cent of them fully resolved. The possible causes of the nerve palsy appeared to be direct traction on the nerve, traction on the surrounding tissues resulting in vascular compromise to the nerve, direct pressure on the nerve from the postoperative dressing, or a combination of these factors. When the palsy is discovered, the suggested treatment is a change to a looser dressing and flexion of the knee. The value of surgical exploration of the nerve in the immediate postoperative period is not known.
